What is the Jackson Generation plant?
The Jackson energy plant will be a state-of-the-art combined cycle generating plant which will be able to produce approximately 1,000-1,200 MW electricity. The plant will be located in the Village of Elwood, Will County, Illinois.
What is combined cycle electric generation?
Combined cycle generation uses clean burning natural gas to power turbines to produce electricity. Exhaust heat from that process produces excess heat which is harnessed to power a steam turbine generator. This combined cycle system produces up to 50% more electricity than current peaking plants, without additional fuel.
Why did J-POWER pick this location?
The site is in close proximity to the interstate natural gas transmission pipelines and near a robust electric power transmission grid system. The site is currently zoned for industrial use, including power generation.
How much land will Jackson Generation occupy?
When complete, Jackson Generation energy plant will occupy approximately 30 acres of land.
How will the plant affect environmental quality?
Jackson Generation will be a state-of-the-art facility that utilizes the best technology to minimize emissions. The plant will be fueled by natural gas and produce lower emissions than other fossil fuel plants in the state. It will comply with all federal, state and environmental standards.
Where is the natural gas coming from?
Clean-burning natural gas for the Jackson Generation plant will come from existing gas pipelines that are already in place, and will only need to be extended a short distance. Due to the proximity to major gas pipelines, Jackson Generation will have access to most major gas supply basins in North America.
How many construction and operational jobs will be created?
Construction is targeted to last 36 months. During peak construction phase, the project will employ up to 500 craft union workers. When fully operational, the plant will employ up to 35 full time operators and provide economic benefits to the community.
